Am Anfang dachte ich, es sei nur ein weiteres "Travel Buch". Nach einer Weile merkt man, dass es um viel mehr geht als nur eine Weltreise. Es ist beeindruckend und vor allem überraschend traurig, was Elspeth erlebt und erzählt.Auch wenn man nichts mit Motorrädern anfangen kann, ist dieses Buch grandios. Es geht wenig ums Fahren oder irgendwelche technischen Details - vielmehr um die Kulturen und die persönliche Entwicklung.
As much a voyage of the self as a motorcycle adventure. A riveting read with a slow burn at the beginning, Elspeth captures the drive and loneliness of a woman who wants to prove herself to others: family, friends, acquaintances but in the end, I think, discovers who she was all along, an individual who wants to be who she is: tough, loving, passionate, an individual, and a very very amazing woman. This is more than just a ride. It's a remarkable look into why we all, to a greater or lesser extent, ride motorcycles. Namely, that search to discover oneself through a passion that unites all bikers. It's a great story looking into a brief but formative 'episode' in her life, an enjoyable adventure, a chance for the experienced traveler/biker to reflect on common experiences and a heartfelt record of the human in all of us. Elspeth's indomitable spirit shines through and draws you in and sweeps you along with ups, downs, and hairy near misses with death ending with self-triumph and poignancy. And the biking bits ain't bad either. Read and enjoy, if it grips you, you won't put it down until the end. If it doesn't, then get out on your bike and reawaken the passion!
Very interesting tale about riding around the world on a motorcycle. Well-written too! I thought the author accurately describes the trials and tribulations of such travel, as well as the joys. It's not all fun and games, and takes an amazing amount of perseverance, which she obviously has. It's also interesting how difficult and unusual it was for a woman to ride a "big" bike in those days, and how little interest there was in her venture. How things have changed! And yet, I can't help thinking she did it just the right way: with a minimum of baggage (despite those giant self-made boxes!) on a bike she knew well and was able to repair herself. Nowadays everything is so hi-tech and tailored to long-distance travel. You can go far away but you're still so connected to home. Can't help but thinking she had the greater adventure by far!
I have been reading many travel books motorcycle and otherwise. This book goes further than most because it gives a more intimate picture of the traveller. The actual places visited and their description are moving a little into the background and the person elspeth dominates the picture. It is the story of a amazing young woman who did such a trip with very limited resources, keeping her bike alive better than most men.
The first woman to ride a motorcycle around the world. Who could resist such a story? Elspeth Beard's recounting of her journey is much more than a travel book. Like all great books of this genre, it is a deep look into the writer's psyche. Here we find a ballsy, lucky, determined woman who sets out to prove herself right and everyone she knows wrong. The fact that I traveled through a good deal of the areas Ms. Beard writes about at roughly the same year; give or take a few, showed me how well and accurately are the descriptions of life, roads, culture, etc. This is a MUST read.
Thank you Elspeth Beard. Some of us have been waiting decades for you to write a book of your journey round the globe, and this has made it worth the wait. I have enjoyed this book (and the photographs!) immensely, so much so that I've started on a second reading. Engaging, inspiring and beautifully written, your history is a major contribution to the adventure travel genre, and you have my deepest admiration and thanks.
A wonderful look into a time when adventure riding was in its infancy. I read this from cover to cover in a few days and found it honest and inviting. Elspeth faced tremendous hardships on her journey and including those personal details made the book even richer. I would recommend it.On a side note, Mary Siever, also a Brit, traveled the world on a 175cc BSA in the 1970s, roughly a decade before Beard. Unfortunately, there are only a few news clippings about Siever's trip, but still, she could lay claim to being the first British woman to travel around the world.
Truly enjoyed her book from beginning to end. She showed how determined she was to complete her journey, and showed all the would-be sponsors it could be done by a woman. Very impressed how she had the knowledge to make repairs when needed to her Air head, no matter what problems developed over a two year non-stop trip out of country included. I am a BMW rider and owner, and was very disappointed to read that the BMW company refused to help even sponsor her, although riding on one of their own machines in this long journey including several others that could and should have stepped up to help her with her plans at the time? I am quite sure anyone that reads her book, or attends any of her educational events will be impressed at how much she has been through to fulfill her dream that she made come true, and proud to share with all her readers, and friends, including me for one.
